Counterterrorism Blog: Britains Double Vision of Hezbollah?

Counterterrorism Blog: Britains Double Vision of Hezbollah?.

The British government’s announcement to open a dialogue with “the political wing of Hizballah” is most troubling. In a statement to a parliamentary committee, Bill Rammell, the British foreign office’s minister for Middle East affairs, rationalized the decision on the grounds of what his office perceives to be “more positive developments within Lebanon.”

This British declaration underscores a pervasive failure to properly understand the structure of the Iranian-backed terrorist organization. At worst, the call to distinguish between the group’s political and military wings (in terms of decision-making) may be driven by a desire to construct imaginary facts for diplomatic and political purposes. Are officials selling a false image of what Hizballah is so that they join the foray of the “sitting, talking and listening” with Iran and Syria’s regimes now underway?

Very possible. But it would have been much better to inform the public that the government intends to talk to a terrorist organization for purpose of national interest, rather than claiming the talks are only with the political wing. Eight years after 9/11 and the subsequent attacks worldwide, citizens are much better informed about jihadi organizations than they were in the 1990s. Officials in the UK and the US must realize that claiming there are two Hizballah(s) will not fly with most of the public.

“I am not Jewish but…” by Rupert Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch Photo - I am not Jewish but.....

I am not Jewish but… | Op-Ed Contributors | Jerusalem Post .

Over the years, some of my wildest critics seem to have assumed I am Jewish. At the same time, some of my closest friends wish I were.

So let me set the record straight: I live in New York. I have a wife who craves Chinese food. And people I trust tell me I practically invented the word “chutzpah.”

Ladies and gentleman, I am humbled by the honor you have given me – because this award speaks more to your good work than it does to mine.

The American Jewish Committee started in response to the persecution of Jews in czarist Russia. And your response took a very American form: an organization that would speak up for those who could not speak for themselves.

In the century since your founding, the American Jewish Committee has become one of the world’s most influential organizations. Yet though your concerns begin with the safety and welfare of Jews, these concerns are anything but parochial. The reason for this is clear: You know that the best guarantee of the security of Jews anywhere is the freedom of people everywhere.

Your good work has helped bring real and lasting changes to our world. Unfortunately, while some threats have been defeated, new ones have taken their place. And these new threats remind us the AJC’s work is more vital than ever.

In Europe, men and woman who bear the tattoos of concentration camps today look out on a continent where Jewish lives and Jewish property are under attack – and public debate is poisoned by an anti-Semitism we thought had been dispatched to history’s dustbin.

The Gaza War and the New Outburst of Anti-Semitism by Manfred Gerstenfeld and Tamas Berzi

via Institute for Global Jewish Affairs – Global Antisemitism, Anti-Israelism, Jewish Studies .

Anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli manifestations reached post-Second World War highs during Israels recent Gaza campaign. Attacks came from many directions. They included strong condemnations of Israeli actions by several governments as well as partly violent demonstrations in a number of countries. Furthermore, there were physical attacks on Jewish individuals as well as institutions. There was also much hate speech.

A number of new hate thresholds were crossed. There were much-increased public expressions of equating Israel with Nazi Germany. Calls for the murder of Jews abounded for the first time in demonstrations in Germany, as well as in the United States. Prominent politicians, including the Norwegian finance minister, marched in such protests. There are indications that a variety of Muslim bodies, including mosque organizations, had planned these events well in advance.

A number of actions by various independent Muslim bodies in several Western countries manifested their desire to conquer the public square and, at the same time, remove Jewish and Israeli identities from it. This development is relevant not only to Jews but also to the general public. Those who want to impose themselves in the public domain today at the expense of Jews, are likely to do so tomorrow at the expense of others.

The Gaza war has shown once again that Israel can cope with the many military challenges it faces. On the other hand, the problems of the asymmetric verbal war conducted against it by circles from the United Nations, several Western political parties, media, academe, NGOs, and many others have never been properly analyzed by the Israeli authorities. Understanding how this anti-Israeli propaganda functions, and internally interacts, is necessary for gradually building adequate defenses in this area as well.

UK to Host senior Hizbullah member Ibrahim Moussawi

UK to Host Hizbullah Spokesman – Politics & Government – Israel News – Israel National News.

British officials granted senior Hizbullah member Ibrahim Moussawi a visa to visit the country on Thursday. The visa will allow Moussawi to lecture at a conference on political Islam. Moussawi plans to speak at the University of London on March 25.

“Britain is still a place where terrorists and terrorist supporters can come to incite and recruit,” warned CSC Director Douglas Murray

Murray and the CSC were particularly angered by Moussawi’s planned visit in light of Britain’s decision to turn back anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician. Wilders was recently deported while attempting to hold a scheduled meeting with British leaders on the subject of Islam and terrorism.

“This is the deepest hypocrisy, in fact, it is worse than hypocrisy,” Murray said.

CAMERA: The closer terrorists get to Israel, the more likely they are to be transformed linguistically: Terrorists Are Militants Are Fighters

The closer terrorists get to Israel, the more likely they are to be transformed linguistically.

The closer terrorists get to Israel, the more likely they are to be transformed linguistically. In Western news media the sanitization process begins with terrorist, proceeds to the word choice militant, then continues through activist to gunman and onward to insurgent and fighterbefore arriving at the usages resistance and even the opposition. That is, from criminal — terrorism being a crime under international law — through ambiguous neutrality (activist and gunman) before arriving at admirable (resistance) or even legal and political (opposition).

In “A Strike at the ‘Soul’ of S. Asia; Gunmen Target Cricket Team in Pakistan Attack” (March 4), Washington Post correspondent Emily Wax wrote that “a squad of terrorists [this and subsequent emphases added] armed with grenades, rockets and rifles opened fire on a busload of visiting Sri Lankan cricketers players in Lahore, Pakistan ….” The Post’s lead “The World” section article added that “Pakistani officials said the attack bore a resemblance to a terrorist siege in India in November ….” and said “the targeting of Lahore for a high-profile terrorist assault adds a twist to the tensions between India and Pakistan ….”

But near the end of the dispatch, The Post observed that “in India, news stations compared the Lahore attack to the 1972 Munich attack on Israeli Olympians by fighters linked to the Palestine Liberation Organization.”

The article also refers to “a radical Islamist group, Lashkar-i-Taiba, which Indian officials assert had links to the (November 2008) Mumbai assault squad” as “an anti-India militant group” and to Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tigers as “ethnic separatist guerrillas,” though both have specialized in terrorism and are designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government.

The Case for Israel – A New Landmark Documentary with Alan Dershowitz

The Case for Israel – A New Landmark Documentary with Alan Dershowitz.

About the Film:

“We made this film as a proactive defense of Israel.

While Israel repeatedly demonstrates its commitment to peace, anti-Israel activity continues to rise in the media, on campuses, in the churches and in the international community. Israel’s detractors-some with international prominence-blame Israel for the conflict. They deny the fact that Israel has made painful concessions in working toward a two-state solution, which include the 2005 withdrawal from Gaza initiated by former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and that Israel has expressed readiness to take additional painful measures. They ignore the rise in Gaza of Hamas, which rejects peaceful coexistence. They turn a blind eye to the grave challenges inherent in the Palestinian Authority’s unstable governance of the West Bank under Mahmoud Abbas. They rarely acknowledge the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israeli children and other civilians, and they equate that terrorism with Israel’s attempts to protect its citizens. For Israel’s detractors, there is only one focus for fault: Israel. Clearly, as Harvard Law School Professor Alan Dershowitz states in his seminal work The Case for Israel, “the time has come for a proactive defense of Israel to be offered in the court of public opinion.”

We produced this documentary to present a vigorous case for Israel-for its basic right to exist, to protect its citizens from terrorism, and to defend its borders from hostile enemies-in a highly accessible multimedia format. Alan Dershowitz has achieved international distinction as one of Israel’s most prominent and articulate advocates. He plays a central role in this documentary as adviser and on-camera presence and argues forcefully that real peace in the Middle East can only occur when the Palestinians, Arabs and their allies value the creation of a Palestinian homeland more than they oppose the presence of a Jewish state. Through incisive conversations with key judicial, political and academic leaders, Dershowitz refutes deeply entrenched misperceptions about Israel’s history, Jewish claims to a homeland, individual rights under Israel’s democratic system of government, the security fence, and military conduct in the face of terrorist attacks.

He closes with a formidable warning that the greatest threat to Israel is also the greatest threat to international peace and security: Iran’s aggressive nuclear ambitions, driven by a zealous anti-Zionist, anti-democratic mission that is championed by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Unchecked, a nuclear-armed Iran or its terrorist surrogate would imperil targets far beyond Tel Aviv.

This project is truly a team effort. We are indebted to Alan Dershowitz for his intellectual vitality and vigorous engagement with the wide-range of leaders who support Israel’s fundamental democratic values. We also want to extend great appreciation to the Adelson Family Foundation for its vision and willingness to step up to the plate at the earliest stages of this project. CAMERA has served as a tremendous partner in so many ways, including financial support, logistical arrangements, and serving as a constant and constructive sounding board at all phases.

Making this film was the beginning step. We invite you to join us in going forward to make the case for Israel in the court of public opinion.

Why Does The New York Times Love Hamas? :: Steven Emerson

via Why Does The New York Times Love Hamas? :: Steven Emerson.

In the past week, the Fourth Estate’s Hamas cheerleaders have stripped away any pretense of being honest or neutral, with the New York Times continuing to take the side of the terrorist group in one of the most shameful journalistic episodes I have ever seen. In following the Times coverage for the past six months and checking external sources of information, one can see a clear pattern of propagandistic reporting favoring Hamas that selectively suppressed or willfully misrepresented information.

Even the Times knows it has a bias problem. Readers who detected it got a chilling confirmation of their suspicions in the December 13 column by Ombudsman Clark Hoyt. Addressing a public outcry over the paper’s failure to use the term “terrorist” for the attackers who executed some 170 people in Mumbai, India in late November (and mutilated the six Jews killed in the Chabad House—a fact never reported by the Times), Hoyt quoted several reporters and editors making extraordinary admissions that shed some light on the newspaper’s most recent dispatches from Gaza.

The Independent Refuses to Correct Flawed Column on West Bank Sewage

The Independent Refuses to Correct Flawed Column on West Bank Sewage.

Published studies demonstrate that it is the Palestinians  who are mainly responsible for contaminating the water. Palestinian sources are responsible for 95 percent of all untreated waste in the West Bank, yet the remaining five percent from Jewish settlements receives all of Hari’s approbation.

When CAMERA wrote a letter to The Independent requesting a correction of  both the errors in his column on untreated waste and the subsequent  smear, the paper’s Executive Editor, Louise Hayman, stonewalled, justifying her refusal to correct factual errors by stating, “there is no legal, regulatory or ethical requirement on The Independent that every article should be balanced, or even fair.” Apparently, there is also no requirement to be factually accurate.

She claimed that this was not an isolated incident by citing reports in the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, which she described as Israel’s most distinguished newspaper – a highly subjective opinion – and the BBC.
CAMERA responded to her anecdotal defense by providing unequivocal data showing that the raw sewage problem in the West Bank was overwhelmingly of Palestinian origin. Confronted with these facts, Ms. Hayman  fell back upon the primacy of The Independent’s political narrative which holds Israel as an illegal occupier.
