Counterterrorism Blog: Britains Double Vision of Hezbollah?

Counterterrorism Blog: Britains Double Vision of Hezbollah?.

The British government’s announcement to open a dialogue with “the political wing of Hizballah” is most troubling. In a statement to a parliamentary committee, Bill Rammell, the British foreign office’s minister for Middle East affairs, rationalized the decision on the grounds of what his office perceives to be “more positive developments within Lebanon.”

This British declaration underscores a pervasive failure to properly understand the structure of the Iranian-backed terrorist organization. At worst, the call to distinguish between the group’s political and military wings (in terms of decision-making) may be driven by a desire to construct imaginary facts for diplomatic and political purposes. Are officials selling a false image of what Hizballah is so that they join the foray of the “sitting, talking and listening” with Iran and Syria’s regimes now underway?

Very possible. But it would have been much better to inform the public that the government intends to talk to a terrorist organization for purpose of national interest, rather than claiming the talks are only with the political wing. Eight years after 9/11 and the subsequent attacks worldwide, citizens are much better informed about jihadi organizations than they were in the 1990s. Officials in the UK and the US must realize that claiming there are two Hizballah(s) will not fly with most of the public.

Beheading in the Name of Islam – Middle East Quarterly

Beheading in the Name of Islam – Middle East Quarterly.

The purpose of terrorism is to strike fear into the hearts of opponents in order to win political concession. As the shock value wears off and the Western world becomes immunized to any particular tactic, terrorists develop new ones in order to maximize shock and the press reaction upon which they thrive. In the 1970s and 1980s, terrorists hijacked airliners to win headlines. In the 1980s and 1990s, the car bomb became more popular; Palestinian terrorists perfected suicide bombings in the 1990s. But what once garnered days of commentary now generates only hours. Decapitation has become the latest fashion. In many ways, it sends terrorism back to the future. Unlike hijackings and car bombs, ritual beheading has a long precedent in Islamic theology and history.

The writing is on the synagogue wall | Denis MacShane – Times Online

The writing is on the synagogue wall | Denis MacShane – Times Online .

The periodic crises that have shaken world capitalism in the century and a half since Marx wrote Das Kapital are marked by a common political phenomenon. It is the rise of political anti-Semitism. Attacks on Jews and Jewishness constitute the canary in the coal mine that tells us something is going seriously wrong.

As the world enters a new era of crisis, anti-Semitism is back. History, as ever, begins to repeat itself. The slumps and stock market fever expressed in Zola’s novel, L’Argent, or the populist anger against Wall Street at the end of the 19th century gave rise to the virulent anti-Semitic politics witnessed in France in connection with the Dreyfus case or the takeover of Vienna by openly anti-Semitic politicians. The Great Depression gave rise to the worst expressions of anti-Semitism ever seen, namely the politics that led to the Holocaust.

Terrible massacres of Muslims have taken place in different parts of the world so far this century, from Kashmir to Gujarat. In Iraq and Afghanistan, Nato soldiers are accused of brutality but the men with the most blood on their hands of fellow Muslims have been Islamist ideologues. Yet there is no outrage against the perpetrators of those attacks compared with the onslaught on Israel and on Jews.

Anti-Semitism on the rise in Sweden – The Local

Anti-Semitism on the rise in Sweden – The Local.

An ugly wave of anti-Semitism is on the rise in Sweden, and politicians who compare Israel with Nazi Germany or apartheid-era South Africa cannot claim to be free of responsibility, writes David Stavrou, a freelance Israeli journalist based in Sweden.

Sweden, like most countries in the western world, is obsessed with the Middle-East. The Arab-Israeli conflict receives constant media coverage and public interest, and the recent events in Gaza were no exception. As usual, they sparked a lively and sometimes violent debate. Sadly, and this too is usual, the debate is full of misinformation and misunderstandings.

The Israeli regime, while having its flaws, didn’t slaughter, rape and burn thousands of Shia Muslims in Afghanistan. That was the Taliban. Israel is not responsible for the daily suicide bombs in Iraq that claim the lives of thousands of Muslims. Israel is not innocent, it has also committed acts of violence and aggression, but it is nothing compared to the barbaric and murderous regimes in Sudan, Syria and Saudi Arabia, which, like Hamas are all responsible for countless Muslim deaths and for millions of Muslims living in poverty and despair.

Swedes with a conscience may want to stop turning their head the other way when it concerns the homemade tragedies of the Muslim world. Was there a large demonstration in Sergels Torg when the Syrians, the Pakistanis or the Somalis initiated yet another of their bloodbaths? Are there any boycotts of products from the Gulf States which continue to persecute minorities, oppress women and mock basic concepts of freedom and Democracy? Of course not. It’s all Israel’s fault.

Any careful study will show that radical Islamism is not a reaction to Israel’s so-called imperialism – it existed long before the state of Israel; Islamic racism and anti-Semitism are not a reaction to Israel’s so-called aggression, they existed long before the Zionist movement even began and, for God’s sake, movements like Hamas and Hizbullah aren’t really interested in a Palestinian state. Their agenda is to kill Jews, and focusing on this agenda enables them to continue oppressing their own people.

Qaradawis Extremism Laid Bare :: Articles by IPT :: The Investigative Project on Terrorism

Qaradawis Extremism Laid Bare :: Articles by IPT :: The Investigative Project on Terrorism.

American Muslim groups and mainstream American media outlets often paint Qaradawi as a “moderate” who represents mainstream Islam. This dangerous mischaracterization ignores Qaradawi’s speeches, sermons, and writings, which have called for the killing of American and British troops in Iraq, the killing of Jews and the destruction of Israel, the execution of homosexuals, and have shown support for domestic violence against women.

He is currently banned from entering the U.S. or Britain because of his hate-filled rhetoric calling for violence, in the face of the West’s so-called “war against Islam.” In September 2004, Qaradawi proclaimed that it was a religious obligation for Muslims to fight U.S. and British troops in Iraq. The communiqué, signed by Qaradawi and 93 other clerics, said that “the Jihad – waging Iraqi people’s resistance to the foreign occupation … is a Shari’a duty incumbent upon anyone belonging to the Muslim nation, within and outside Iraq, who is capable of carrying it out,” and that it was “forbidden for any Muslim to offer support to the occupiers.”

Additionally, he also has ties to terrorist financing. On November 12, 2008 the U.S. Treasury Department designated the Union of Good (also known as the Charity Coalition), a worldwide collection of charities which listed Qaradawi as the President, under Executive Order 13224 as a terrorist entity as a result of its fund-raising activities on behalf of Hamas and Hamas-controlled organizations in the West Bank and Gaza.

CAMERA – Facts About Hamas

Welcome to CAMERA.

Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) is considered a terrorist organization by much of the non-Arab international community including Israel, the U.S., Canada, Japan, the U.K., Australia and the European Union. Its declared goal is to destroy the Jewish state and replace it with an Islamic one. But ever since the group’s overwhelming victory in Palestinian elections, political figures, like former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former UK Ambassador to the UN Sir Jeremy Greenstock, and Robert Malley of the International Crisis Group, have tried to whitewash Hamas, arguing that it must be recognized and legitimized.

Even while Hamas deliberately targets civilians, endangers the welfare of Palestinians, brutally attacks its opponents, and proclaims its ultimate commitment to Israel’s destruction, there are those who continue to suggest it is merely fighting for its “freedom” alongside Israel. This is false, belied by Hamas’ governing charter, its actions, and its representatives’ own proclamations.

2) Hamas’s ultimate mission–”no matter how long it takes”– is to “fight the Jews and kill them”and to replace the Jewish state with an Islamic caliphate.

…the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to realize the promise of Allah, no matter how long it takes. The Prophet, Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him, says: “The hour of judgment shall not come until the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them, so that the Jews hide behind trees and stones, and each tree and stone will say: ‘Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him,’ except for the Gharqad tree, for it is the tree of the Jews.” (Hamas Charter, Article 7)

As for the goals, they are to fight falsehood, vanquish it and defeat it so that righteousness shall rule, the homeland shall return [to its rightful owner], and from the top of its mosques, the [Muslim] call for prayer will ring out announcing the rise of the rule of Islam, so that people and things shall all return to their proper place. (Hamas Charter, Article 9)
